Time to play

I thought it might be fun to get out the mixed media supplies.  I used matte multi medium to mimic snow on this layout.  It can be intimidating to use supplies that aren’t normally used, but in this case, it was a whole lot of fun!!  Sometimes it’s hard to use these papers that already have designs on them. I decided to embrace the snowman and make him my own by attaching twine where his scarf would be.  This left the rest of the paper open for me to create on.  I applied the multi medium with a stipple brush to give the texture of snow.  I added the “snow” to lots of embellishments around the layout.  See the cardboard tag?  It’s cut from the pizza box I received last from Love is in the Details. (I love using everything I get…. the trick with the cardboard is to rip off the top layer of paper to expose the centre  of the cardboard)  See the silver edged bow?  Here’s my little secret about that….. we always get Christmas crackers that you snap open. I pick the Christmas crackers now based on the paper they use to make them and the bows they use on them.  I die cut the cracker after we have pulled them and I use the bows on cards and layouts…. this is one such bow!)  I added some faint flourish stamps around the layout using a flourish stamp I got in the store and pumice stone distress ink.  Pumice stone is one of my go to inks…. it is so subtle. There is pumice stone glitter, paint and marker currently in the store.  Ask and Lori will bring in the ink.   I used silver dew drops around the layout as well. If you look very closely I stamped tiny snowflakes sparsely around the layout and added tiny adhesive pearls to the centre of the snowflakes.

I hope you find time to play now that the holidays are over.

Out with the old, in with the new

I have been spurred on my Lori. She is reorganizing her scrap space and it is turning out lovely. I ,too, have started to reorganize my scrap supplies and photos. I have decided since it’s a new year to go through all my old photos and get some of them scrapped. I want to make room for all the new products I am adding to my stash and I want to make room for new photos as well.  I grabbed this old photo of when my daughter was dating my son in law. They were at the fall fair so I chose to use some fall themed papers.

I got out my dies and cut some tags and the Memory Box die.

When you are cutting dies, think outside the box.  I would normally use this delicate die on cards only but I decided to cut a few and  use them as accents on my layout.  I think it works wonderfully well and added a little interest to the corners of the layout.  There are a number of dies in the store currently that would work for this purpose. The brown patterned paper was punched around the entire piece to add interest as well.  I cut a square out of the brown patterned paper as well and distressed it and inserted it back where it came from.

I took a few chipboard pieces and coloured them with distress stain. You can see that the different pieces took up the exact same stain in different fashions.  I like the unique way the bottom piece took up the stain. It really brought the stamped pattern out on the chipboard.

Take my lead and go through your stash and get using those older pieces to make room for everything new.  In the process, you might just find some treasures that had been forgotten about.
