Honey, I’m Home

Posted by Brooke on April 23, 2017

I love the little altered wooden houses that Lori makes…so much so that I wanted to put my own little spin on them.

I love mini ANYTHING so these are right up my alley.

I’ve used the new Pebbles - Simple Life by Jen Hadfield line that is available in the store. Actually, every single thing I used to make these houses is available in the store. This line is homey and cozy - perfect for the weather here in Southern Manitoba this weekend.

The whole line is available in-store but I used these products specifically:

Gorgeous patterned papers.

I am loving puffy stickers right now, aren’t you? They add that extra bit of dimension that I love!

So I started out with 3 plain wooden houses - the perfect little canvas. I knew I wanted them to be a dark wood to match the woodgrain elements in the paper collection. I didn’t have walnut stain so I used watered down walnut stain distress ink to stain the wood. I am ecstatic about how it turned out. I applied it with a wide, flat brush and only needed one coat. Once the stain was dry I cut paper pieces to fit on the faces of the houses, adhered them with BeCreative tape (my fave double sided tape!), and sanded the edges a bit to match the distressed looking wood.

Next came little strips of corrugated cardboard for the roofs (rooves?). I lightened up the edges of the cardboard with a bit of white Tim Holtz Distress paint as well.

Now the fun part - decorating.

I tried to keep it simple (ahem, simple life, ahem) as far as embellishing went. Minimal embellishments to keep the layering clean with pieces going over the edges of the wood for interest. The “home” word on the grey house is from the wood veneer package; I just painted it with white distress paint to make it match.

Let me just say, I’m not a big mixed media person and vintage/distress isn’t my preferred style, but I do love the Tim Holtz distress products. At first I was intimidated by them but now I’ve learnt how to adapt them to my scrapbooking style. I love that crafting products don’t have to be used for a specific thing/style and ANYONE can use them!

The last step was adding a few Viva Decor Pearls (’member those??) to the tops to fill in the white space.

Aren’t they sweet? They would make a perfect little gift for a housewarming or even Mother’s day. Maybe they should be a class? Either way, this line is lovely and next time you’re in the store be sure to check it out!
