I have a quick blog post for you guys this week!
Awhile back we got the Fancy Pants Golden Days collection in the store and I just KNEW I had to do something special with it.
The colours were so warm and “homey”…perfect for a home decor project.
I decided to make a wall hanging for my sister and her boyfriend for Christmas - she had just started a gallery wall so I figured it would be perfect.
First things first…I stole some pictures from her Facebook page.
Next came the woodwork.
You might not know this…but I have absolutely zero woodworking experience. Shocking, right? So I enlisted my dad to help me with that part of it. I say help but really I mean that he did all of the woodworking and I supervised. (Thanks Dad!)
We used some cedar boards that my dad had in his workshop but they were big so we he planed them. I’m pretty sure at this point I was having a snack on the couch.
Yes, we wasted all of that beautiful cedar to make it the size I wanted. Worth it.
Once the pieces were cut down to size we he stuck them together with wood glue and then nailed them.
You can see in the picture above that we started out making 2 “pallets”. One is complete but the other still needs to be finished. Soon.
Those little bulldog clips are from Maya Road - they’re in the store in this vintagey dark brown as well as in silver. They’re awesome…perfect for home decor projects.
A close-up of how he attached the little clips.
The final touch was attaching a hanger on the back. By hanger I mean 2 nails with natural twine to give it a bit of a rustic look.
I was going to stain the wood but ended up deciding that the cedar was too beautiful to change the natural look. Maybe i’ll stain the next one. Whaddya think?
Then it was my turn.
I cut cardstock pieces to the size I wanted to act as a sort of guide before I decorated. It made it easier to visualize the final layout.
A closeup of one of the finished sections. Isn’t that floral paper from Golden Days amazing??
I decided to add a bit of interest by adding a muslin bag that I painted with acrylic paint. And that sweet acetate word from the ephemera pack.
And the final product.
I love giving handmade gifts…she teared up when she opened it and that makes it so worth it.
I’m so late posting this (it was a Christmas gift) so there isn’t a ton of Golden Days left in the store. I’m pretty sure there is paper left and some embellishments…but I am teaching a card class in April that features the papers and tags. Check it out here. If you like the look of this line, the new Simple Life - Jen Hadfield line will be going out in the store this week and it has very similar colours and textures.
It would be perfect for a project like this.
Have a lovely Wednesday!
