Hockey, hockey and more hockey….

Not the blog post title you expect to see here, is it?!  Well, it’s not your typical blog post/layout either.  It’s a two-pager!  Remember those??

A while back Brooke and Lori were talking about two-page layouts, and how we never do them anymore, and should we do some again, and post a challenge?  Since then, I haven’t been able to get the idea out of my mind, and wondered if I could even do it anymore.  They’re all I used to do…but it’s been a lot of years!  So I decided to challenge myself and see what came of it.

It helped that we were recently in Utah to visit our youngest son for a charity hockey event he was involved in.  And we took a lot of pictures there.  I started by printing all these photos in color.  But when I laid them all out on the cardstock, I got a bit freaked by the busy-ness of it all.  So I edited and reprinted in black and white.  And I was much happier with the results.  I decided to keep one photo in color to draw the eye to it, and establish it as the main photo.

One of the things I realized about doing a 2-pager, is that there is a lot going on and so I needed some structure to balance the visual circus (even in black and white!)  The best way I found to manage that, was to establish some strong lines.  To accomplish that, I laid the check-patterned paper along the bottom and visualized a horizontal line for the photos all to align with.  After adhering the photos, I ran the page through the sewing machine again, to emphasize that horizontal line, as well as to repeat the sewing I used to adhere the patterned papers with.  After that, I kept paper choice and embellishments to classic masculine patterns with minimal visual impact.  The hockey player and skate are appliques by Wright’s, that I found years ago in the fabric store.  (Glad to finally get them used!)

The journaling reads:  Working for the Dept of Corrections in UT, Ben gets to exercise his Canadian-born hockey skills playing for the Guns in the annual Guns vs Hoses  charity tournament.  This year we went to watch them play.  It was an entertaining day of hockey.  The Guns beat the Hoses badly in both their games.  Ben contributed a goal and two assists.

Some of the product I used is patterned paper by Photo Play (Mad 4 Plaid), label, alphabet and word stickers by Simple Stories (Bloom and Grow), alphabet stickers (red) from Jillibean Soup, die-cut alphabets (blue) by Sizzix/Tim Holtz, chipboard stars from the LiitD store, and epoxy hearts from Bella Blvd (Illustrated Faith).

So, if you’re at all inclined, feel free to take this as a challenge and see if you remember how to scrap a two page layout!  And have a great rest of your day!

Great layouts Norine, I would have never thought to mix black and white and colour photos together on a layout. You are right it does take away some of the busyiness.  I also like that you didn’t go overboard on embellishments you have the right amount and it doesn’t take away from the layouts !!
