Mum & Dad … I miss you …

Mum, it’s been over 30 years now since I got to talk to you … that’s a long time and I have a lot to tell you.  I am 53 now, two years younger than you were when you passed away.  Mum, you never told me all the changes that would happen to me, the aging process, but I get it now and understand a whole lot of things I didn’t 30 years ago.

Mum, I have two kids now, Justin who is 30, and Chantel who is 26.  Justin looks like me, and I look like you, so we know where he got his good looks from.  Chantel took more to her Dad’s side, but yet, when people see her they say she looks like me, and I look like you, so again, we know where she got her good looks from.  Both of them are sensitive, Justin keeps it inside, Chantel lets it show a little more than he does.  Both of them are so hard working, considerate of others, and both have such big hearts, they make me proud.  You would be proud of them too Mum, I know it.  Justin lives in Alberta so I don’t get to see him as often.  Chantel lives here in Manitoba, not too far away, so I get to see her more.  Justin and his girlfriend Katherine were just here for Christmas, we got to have a great visit.  You would like Katherine, she was meant for Justin.  Justin is mellowing out as he gets older, Chantel, a little, but not quite as much.  Chantel and I can still have a good argument … just like Dad and I did.  That part, that stubborn part, that I inherited from him, right?

I’m married to Paul, we’ve been together 14 years, you would love him, he looks after me.  He’s gentle and kind, and he too has a big heart.  When I tell him stories about you, he always says that he wished he could have met you.  I do too.  Mum, there’s so much I would like to tell you, we missed out on so much, you were too young.  Oh how I wish I could pick up the phone and talk to you, I really miss that.  I cherish every memory I have of you, and I pass along these memories and stories of you so everyone can know how wonderful you were.  I miss you Mum, a lot.

Dad, it’s been almost 10 years now since I got to talk to you … and I have a lot to tell you too.  I’m doing good, I told you I would be okay, I told you that Paul would look after me.  The kids are doing great, and they talk about you a lot.  Justin loves to tell stories, just like you, and he tells a lot of stories that he learned from you.  Sometimes I shake my head Dad … seriously!  Chantel remembers little things you would say and often says, if Gramps were here, this is what he would say.  When Justin bought his house, he knew you would like all the trees in the back, and he knew you would be so proud.  Chantel, she has plans for big flower beds and gardens full of frogs when she buys a house, you would be proud of her and all the things she wants to do.  She got a tattoo of a frog, just for you, with Gramps wrote right under it, she wanted you with her wherever she went.

Paul is still working at the same place, I still have my store but it’s in Winkler now, we actually moved to Winkler.  All that stuff you had in your garage, a lot of it was made into shelves for the store.  You would like the store, and I often say how nice it would have been to have you around to build me things.  I think about you a lot, different things remind me of you … including Justin and Chantel.  They have a lot of your characteristics, I just told Mum about one of them.  ;)  I miss you coming over, I miss seeing you open your coat so Zero could curl up inside of it, I miss your laugh.  It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years, I miss you Dad, a lot.

I miss you and Mum, a lot.
