Seven Layer Layout

Posted by Brooke on July 13, 2016

Hello again!

Grab your coffee, smooth those wrinkles out of your jammies and let’s look at a layout.

Oh, it’s just me in my raggedy jammies and slippers. Alrighty then.

I was so excited to get my Prima watercolor palette from Lori and start playing with it! Last week, Norine showed you some super cool techniques (I can’t wait to try that water-wicking one!) for the Prima watercolors. I decided to use them on layouts to make some “mixed media” backgrounds. I can’t stress enough how lovely these paints are; they really are “Watercolor Confections”. They are heavily pigmented and paint such a rich colour. Prima, you just get me.

I used the “Decadent” pies set for this layout:

Aren’t they just so pretty? I almost didn’t want to use them because the packaging is so nice. ALMOST.

This  layout was the very FIRST thing I made since returning to the scrapbooking world. 5 years of pent-up creative inspiration and my fingertips were tingling as I pulled out that first sheet of crisp white cardstock. Could I still scrapbook? Would I still be able to glue paper together and stick stickers down?

Well, it turns out that kindergarten students can do that so I guess it all worked out okay.  It just goes to show you that even if it’s been awhile since you scrapbooked, it only takes an ounce of creative inspiration and a couple new products from Lori’s store ;) to get you back into it. If I can get back into it…so can YOU!

For this layout I started out with a blank canvas…a fresh sheet of white cardstock. I used my prima watercolours and a wide, flat brush to make vertical strokes of the 2 pinkish colours for my background. I dried the paint with my heat tool because I’m a super impatient clever crafter and then put my texture paste down. I used a beautiful Tim Holtz stencil with my texture paste to add a raised design. Basically, I laid my stencil down, spread the texture paste with my little craft spatula, peeled the stencil off (make sure you wash it off right away!), and then dried it with my heat tool. Again, I’m an impatient clever crafter. Once the paste was dry I painted over it with the watercolour paints. I used a pointed tip paintbrush to selectively paint with the 2 pink colours instead of a wide, flat brush for a more varied colour on the flowers.

Once the background was done I started layering.

I used some papers from the Maggie Holmes Bloom Collection (I seriously just can’t get enough of it!), chipboard from the Bloom collection, some vintage lace, glittery Christmas tree ornament leaves I had laying around, a doily, and some fussy cut flowers from an old patterned paper to layer behind my photo.

This photo is so special to me because it’s a picture my fiancee took of me right after we got engaged. On the Sleeping Giant, at the Sea Lion, at sunset. It’s pictures like these that make me so glad I scrapbook and can showcase our memories.

On the left side of the photo I placed some of the gray  Petite Diction phrase stickers to balance out the right side.

A close-up of some of the embellishments on the right side.

That little “couple” wood veneer piece is from the Kaisercraft travel themed wood veneer pack along with a little puffy heart from the Wonder collection. I love that the Kaisercraft wood veneer pack is so versatile…it’s travel themed but can be used on tons of different themed layouts.

Some small paper flowers from the shop, a Prima paper leaf, and a title were the finishing touches. The word “day” in the title was made using a Versamark pen and some blue embossing powder. I wrote out the word with the versamark pen then quickly sprinkled embossing powder over and heat embossed. I then fussy cut it and popped it up with some 3D foam squares. I love that I can handwrite my own titles and make them look finished and shiny with embossing.  That Versamark pen is the bomb dot com.

Scattered throughout the layout are some little pink enamel dots that I made. I MADE them. Right? Lori has new Nuvo Crystal drops available in the brick & mortar store in a whole bunch of colours. Maybe if you’re super nice to her she’ll post ‘em online. ;)

672n_packed_1000_rgbI used the bubblegum pink colour to make my enamel dots. I was a bit too nervous to squeeze this stuff directly onto my layout for the first time so I used wax paper and let them dry before gluing them on with wet glue. They make PERFECT little enamel dots everytime. I obviously need every colour and you do too.

Once the bulk of the layout was done I adhered the white cardstock to the B-side of the Delighted paper with pop up foam dots. Since the cardstock had watercolour paint on it I wanted to secure it on a piece of paper to give it some support and prevent it from warping. Plus, mint green marble patterned paper. I mean, come on.
